note 1 communication technoligies

TIJ-1WO COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY UNIT

Unit Details
Students will sectioned off into 4 groups, moving between activities on a rotational basis. Because of the way the Communications lab is set up, students will be on tight timelines to
complete their work so as to ensure all students get an opportunity to complete all projects. Students will be constantly assessed and evaluated for requisite learning skills, with a rubric for each project.

1. Yearbook (Graphic Design)

Using state-of-the-art digital software, students will design and create their own unique cover for the St. John’s College Yearbook. Each student will utilize the necessary planning techniques and employ graphic design principles in designing their full-colour cover for print. Design ideas are open concept, but must fall within acceptable Board and School guidelines. Each student will complete their own individual cover.

2. Morning Newscast (Broadcast Journalism)

Using standard format digital camcorders, students will be formed into groups and take on the roles found in the video industry. Ideally, each student will have a chance to act as producer, videographer, director, and editor, as co-operative learning is the expectation. Students will have 2 days to plan and shoot a morning news update, with their formal plans to be submitted for approval by the teacher. The remaining time will be spent editing the video for final evaluation.

3. Every Picture Tell the Story (Digital Essay Photography)

Using standard digital still cameras, students working in pairs will create a photo essay with an established theme. This is another open concept project, with students submitting their concept to the teacher for approval. The final project will be a photo essay slideshow to be accompanied by an explanatory presentation to the class.

4. Flash Movie (Digital Animation)

Using the digital software Macromedia Flash, students will design and create a short animation to be used as a motion graphic title for their final DVD portfolio. The animation will be accompanied by music and will employ several basic Flash animations. The final project will be a 10 second animation accompanied by music.

Final Summative Assignment

Students will gather all of their respective projects and create a BLOG’s portfolio of their work in the Communications Lab. Using www.blogger.com. The summative assignment will encompass all prior learning and will be evaluated consequently.

Due to the tight time constraints of this course, students MUST be organized and put forth their best efforts in time management. Please respect your fellow classmates to ensure all receive the same opportunities to use all equipment and software.
